The Museum of African Design will host celebrated designers such as David Tlale and Kluk CGDT during a five week exhibition titled Fashioning Africa.

The exhibition follows hot on the heels of the successful Native Nostalgia and will explore the history of African fashion. It will also bring together some of the continent’s contemporary designers through a showcase of the various events celebrating African fashion.

Aaron Kohn, the director of the museum said he was excited to see the South African market being exposed to more African designers.

“African fashion has taken off in the North American and European markets, but often designers from other parts of Africa struggle to share their work within Africa,” said Kohn.

A total of 12 African countries will be represented in the exhibit, which will also feature a 30m functional winding catwalk that will have mannequins, designer stories and photographs displayed on it. The exhibition will open with a preview evening on 19 March at 8pm and will close on 27 April with a show presented by the fashion designers operating in the Maboneng Precinct.

Other events to take place during the exhibition include designer talks, popup shows and fashion shows.

Other participating designers include Laduma Ngxokolo (South Africa), Mille Collines (Rwanda), Anna Ngann Yonn (Cameroon/Paris), Mikuti (Kenya/USA), Project Mental (Angola) and Daniele Tamaguni (Congo/Italy).
