For the love of art, or not

BRAAMFONTEIN - If you need a space where business and art meet, Velo is where you need to be.

Situated at The Grove in Melle Street, Braamfontein, Velo is both a café and a gallery.

The shop is a platform for both creative minds and entrepreneurs to interact and share ideas in a common space while sharing some great food and coffee.

Its walls boast affordable work from up-and-coming artists which bring warmth to the minimalist style setting. This is a great place to find fresh ideas and talent.

Owner Nick du Plooy said the shop aspired to offer the best art prints. “We aspire to serve the best coffee and food in town,” he said.

He added that Braamfontein was an exciting place for a young entrepreneur. “When I started my business two years ago I employed two people, one of which was a car guard on Juta Street. Now I employ 18 enthusiastic individuals.”

Asked about the feel of the place du Plooy said, “The cafe meets the traditional Eurocentric qualities with a Joburg inner city feel. It’s a meeting place for creatives and entrepreneurs and offers popular bistro style eats for the ‘suits’ in the area.”

“The art on the wall provides a much needed platform for emerging artists as well as a new buyers’ market for younger art enthusiasts. The concept has been well received, so far we have sold over 300 art works and we are now also exhibiting artists from all over the world.”

Like other Braam entrepreneurs Du Plooy is passionate about what he does. “What makes me tick is the opportunity presented by the inner city and the platform my business has created for me and the great people that live and work here.”
