Lightning strikes Hursthill and The Ridge substations causing power outage

JOBURG – In a statement, City Power said due to the lightning strike, a transmission line feeder around the Delta area lost power supply.

City Power has notified residents supplied by the Hursthill and The Ridge substations of a power failure after lightning struck the transmission line feeder earlier this afternoon, 11 March.

In a statement, City Power said the transmission line feeding the two substations around the Delta area lost power supply due to the lightning strike.

“We have operators on-site at the two substations to investigate and work on repairs and restorations.”

Affected areas include:

Hursthill substation: 

  • Crosby
  • Melville
  • Newlands
  • Auckland Park
  • Westdene and the surrounding areas.

The Ridge substation:

  • Isle of Houghton
  • Parklane Clinic
  • Grifton Road
  • St Andrew Road
  • York Road
  • Wellington Street
  • Parktown (Kenridge Hospital).

The power outage has affected traffic lights on major roads in the affected areas. City Power is not sure when power will be restored.
