Hospital senior management take over cleaning duties
PARKTOWN – Instead of giving out roses and chocolates the senior management at Charlotte Maxeke were on their hands and knees on Valentine's Day.
The Charlotte Maxeke Hospital management and hospital board showed their appreciation for the cleaners by engaging on a Valentine’s Day Executive Cleaning Outreach at the hospital premises in Parktown.
The CEO of the hospital Gladys Bogoshi, who was cleaning public toilets, said it was empowering to work with the cleaning team and feel what they go through and experience every day. She said that most times they went to the cleaning staff when things were not alright but that day, they were very happy to be getting together with them in that manner.
“We are also here to learn about all the equipment that they are using and how they use it. We are doing a coaching programme for some of the managers and of the subjects of focus is how to standardise cleaning in the hospital. We saw it as important for us to go and see in order to understand and learn as well as tackle obstacles,” said Bogoshi.
She added that on the day, instead of buying flowers and saying ‘I love you’ they said ‘leave the dust to us as management’. The CEO said they were in different sections of the hospital with the other management staff cleaning toilets, wall and windows.
Bogoshi said she wouldn’t have a problem repeating the routine in the future.
Senior management member Masechaba Mthezuka-Kganakga said she wouldn’t take the cleaning staff for granted and they deserve all the respect. “I clean at home but I don’t use all the equipment here today; this is a whole different ball game,” she said.
She added that the equipment was colour-coded for various purposes which took a lot of skill to master.
Cleaning manager Johanna Schlebusch said, “Today is very special for us. To see the appreciation from our management is very refreshing. As a manager myself, seeing what my staff is doing and them being appreciated means a lot too because we love them and want to show them that. We want to thank our management for seeing what we are going through on a daily basis.”
