St John’s College enjoyed an exciting day of swimming in the sun as they fundraised to upgrade aquatic facilities at their school.
The BigSplash Swim-a-thon was a parents’ association initiative enjoyed by the entire campus from the little boys in Grade 0 to the young men and women in Sixth Form.
The college boys swam with the Pre-Prep boys in grades 0, 1 and 2 to help them across the pool.
Spot prizes were awarded to boys who swam the most laps in each grade, for funky costumes and hats and those with the most spirit and offering the most support.
Director of sport at St John’s Pre-Prep Heather Crossley said, “It was fantastic to see parents, siblings, aunts and uncles in the pool swimming for a cause. The Cooke family managed to swim 350 laps between the four of them.”
Deputy headmaster of student affairs Martin Huysamer and war cry leader Kenny Kgongwane acted as emcees, interviewing boys, encouraging swimmers, handing out sports prizes and adding to the fun. Parents were hard at work all afternoon flipping burgers and selling cool drinks.
Crossley said, “Swimming is a sport and fundamental life skill, and we believe that no-one, including staff, should leave St John’s without being able to swim. St John’s introduced a swimming programme for our adult interns 18 months ago. We also started swimming lessons for our Prep Academy (youngsters who join us for academic enrichment from neighbouring schools in Yeoville) at the start of this year.”
St John’s will know how much money was collected once all money is handed in at the end of February.
