Parktown Boys’ SGB responds to MEC’s threat of imminent action against the school

PARKTOWN – The school says Enock Mpianzi and his family should receive the justice they deserve.

Parktown Boys’ High School said that they welcome the acceleration of the Gauteng Department of Education’s investigation into Enock Mpianzi’s death.

Media liaison at Parktown Boys’, Kim van Es, said, “The Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi announced earlier today [22 January] on 702 [radio station] that in the next 48 hours he is going to act against the school and school leadership. The SGB of Parktown Boys’ High School will remain in communication with the MEC regarding further steps in this regard.”

The MEC’s announcement follows a statement on 702 from a Grade 8 learner who said that he was placed in the same group as Enock during the river-rafting activity.

The learner stated that he informed school staff and camp facilitators numerous times about Enock’s disappearance. He also said that he saw Enock struggling in the river. The learner added that Malcolm Williams, the headmaster at Parktown Boys’, instructed him not to speak to anyone about what happened.

Van Es said, “We are utterly committed to ensuring Enock and the Mpianzi family receive the justice they deserve.”

“We are giving input with the honesty and courage that has defined our institution. We will play our part to ensure that we get to the bottom of this tragedy, for the truth to be told and to ensure that it never happens again.”
