Concern over Zoo Lake ablution facilities during festive season

PARKVIEW – The Zoo Lake Users Committee said they will engage with City again to address the issue of ablution facilities at Zoo Lake, especially during the festive season.

A resident recently raised concerns about the shortage of toilet facilities at Zoo Lake over the festive season.

The resident said that it seems there are not enough ablution facilities to accommodate a large number of visitors to the public park. The resident alleged that some park-goers have relieved themselves on the sports field. The resident enquired whether or not council or City Parks could provide portable toilets during this period.

Fran Haslam, chairperson of the Zoo Lake Users Committee (ZLUC) said there are three working ablution blocks at Zoo Lake.

“Regrettably they are not sufficient for public holidays and the weekends at Zoo Lake. They are also being vandalised on a regular basis and the City have an uphill battle trying to keep them maintained and in working order,” said Haslam.

She added that the Zoo Lake Users Committee will be engaging with the City again with regard to addressing this issue. Haslam said, “Portable toilets are costly and without permanent security 24/7 at Zoo Lake it appears to be impractical.”

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette is awaiting comment from Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo regarding the matter.
