The Rosebank Homeless Association reflects on the year 2019

ROSEBANK – The Rosebank Homeless Association is grateful for the community's generosity and encourages people to continue to give especially at this time of the year.

As the year draws to an end, the Rosebank Homeless Association (RHA) took time to reflect on what they have achieved and where they are going.

“Times are tough, and this is shown in the number of people on the streets, and the increasing demand for help from those who have fallen on hard times, for whatever reason. We at the RHA are always enormously impressed by the generosity of the community; donations of clothes, shoes and blankets through the RHA donations box in Rosebank Mall,” said chairperson of the association, Judith Briggs.

She extended the association’s gratitude to the mall for making this a possibility and the direct help of time and food to the Immaculata Shelter in Sturdee Avenue.

Briggs said the formation of the Johannesburg Homelessness Association was a milestone this year as it brings together those in need, those running shelters and training, various council departments and professionals and academics from the University of Wits to see how best to assist those who need help.

“The active involvement of the Rosebank SAPS to reform the Rosebank Car Guards is another positive step both for the safeguarding of our streets and for the upliftment of those guards. And we have had great encouragement and help from the Rosebank Management District team.”

She added, however, that one disappointment is the lack of opportunity for the people of the Zinto Zinhle sewing group to enhance their skills, and to display and sell their products – more markets and selling spaces are really needed.

Briggs said the biggest need, as always, is for job opportunities, and for people to trust, train and employ people in need of this. “This is always where we battle the most, along with the ongoing need for clothing and shoes for men, we get lots of donations for women but there are more men in need.

“While thanking the Rosebank community for all the generosity, I would urge them to continue to give to those less privileged, especially at this time of the year.”
