Teddy Bear Foundation discuss their achievements in 2019

PARKTOWN – The foundation mentioned some of their fundraising highlights from 2019.

The Teddy Bear Foundation, located in Parktown, reflected on their achievements and challenges during 2019.

The foundation provides holistic, integrated services to children who have been abused and their families. These free services include medical exams, forensic assessment, therapy and court preparation. They also run a number of outreach projects including school awareness programmes, initiatives addressing gender-based violence in schools and a support programme for abuse-reactive children, giving them a second chance in life by diverting them away from the criminal justice system.

Some fundraising highlights during the year have included the foundation’s swimming team who took part in the Midmar Mile, the work by learners at The Ridge School who raised funds through a movie day, the annual gala dinner and cyclists who took part in the Discovery 947 cycle challenge.

The Teddy Bear Foundation and its founder Dr Shaheda Omar have also won a number of awards this year including Influential Women of the Year 2019, South African Healthcare Leadership Award 2019 – women leadership and the South African Healthcare Leadership Award for Best Social Initiative.

The foundation has also seen legislative changes including the abolishment of corporal punishment at home and the establishment of a gender-based violence steering committee in the office of the presidency as victories.

Community members are encouraged to support the work of the Teddy Bear Foundation by making financial contributions, collecting toys, stationery and toiletries for children to receive at Christmas and Easter parties. The organisation itself also welcomes donations of stationery, paper, cleaning material, tea/coffee, milk, sugar, peanut butter and jam to assist at the offices. Food items are used to feed children when they come to the foundation hungry.
