12-year-old drives awareness and fundraising for endangered birds

ROSEBANK – A Kingsmead College learner was at the forefront of an awareness initiative about endangered birds conservation.

Kingsmead College learner Mahdiyyah Wadee took the initiative to raise funds for endangered birds in South Africa and aid in their conservation at the school’s Goodwill Day.

The 12-year-old is a member of non-profit association BirdLife South Africa in Dunkeld together with Bird Gardens Monte Casino (Mabula Ground Hornbill Project) and supported by Falconry Conservation.

Mahdiyyah welcomed adults and children to her stall where she sold bird merchandise including key rings, badges and posters to encourage bird life conservation and awareness on the day. The aim was to raise awareness about the impact that humans have on bird decline and habitat loss through deforestation and urbanisation.

At the stall, the learner also had information about South Africa’s bird of the year, the secretary bird, and she sold the birds in the form of plush toys. Visitors also had access to information about South Africa’s National Bird, the blue crane.

She showed residents how to become a member of BirdLife South Africa to assist further.
