Park Care Centre hosts rock n roll event for residents
PARKTOWN WEST – Residents enjoyed the rock n roll-themed day with friends.
Residents of Park Care Centre in Parktown West took a trip down memory lane during an eventful 60s rock and roll-themed fun day on 28 September.
Park Care Centre is an NPO which provides specialised 24-hour nursing care to frail long-term and short-term residents.
Business development and fundraising manager Jaqui Smith said the centre housed 320 residents, many of whom were not able to go out. They also have 200 staff members who nurse, cook, clean and administrate at the centre.
“Most residents are older and when we had the rock n roll theme last year, they really enjoyed it since it takes them down memory lane. They requested that we repeat the same theme this year,” said Smith.
Residents and their family members were encouraged to don wigs and dress up for the festive occasion. The diner was also decorated to the theme and residents were able to dance to the music of Elvis Presley and others.
“We want residents to feel special. Some of them live far from family and don’t go out much. This is an opportunity for them to feel special and give them dignity,” said Smith.
Since the centre is funded through donations, community members are invited to donate to assist with the running costs.
Smith requested donations of toiletries, makeup, jewellery, art materials, linen, clothing, curtaining and maintenance work, among other things. Locals are also welcome to volunteer their time to talk to residents at the centre.
