No bail for suspects linked to Parkview resident’s disappearence

JOHANNESBURG – After four postponements of the bail hearing, all three suspects linked to Wayne Smith's case were denied bail.

 


The three suspects in custody in connection with the disappearance of Parkview resident, Wayne Smith were denied bail.

After several postponements of the hearing, the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court ruled that all three suspects were denied bail and the case hearing will be on 12 September in Court 10 in the same magistrate’s court. Charl Smith, husband of Wayne, said, “I feel relieved in a big way knowing that the suspects can’t run away and they will answer to their actions.”

Wayne was last seen on 12 June at his place of work in Rosebank and developments in his case as per the bail hearings were as follows:

  • 30 July: Friends, family and Charl Smith gather outside the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court with placards to protest against the possible granting of bail to the three suspects.
  • 6 August: The three suspects appear in court for the second time and charges of abduction and hijacking are heard.
  • 12 August: The state prosecutor states at the bail bearing that the suspects changed part of their statements, therefore, requested another postponement to argue the case.
  • 23 August: New developments which include Smith’s car and the handset being found lead to another postponement.
  • 26 August: Magistrate denies all three suspects bail.
