Parktown Girl paddler heads for Slovakia

PARKVIEW – Tinyiko will represent South Africa at the Olympic Hopeful competition in Slovakia in September.

Grade 9 learner at Parktown High School for Girls Tinyiko Mahwayi is excited to represent South Africa at the Olympic Hopeful competition for paddling in Slovakia in September.

Tinyiko and her friend Thembelihle Jokozela of Thaba Jabula High School participated in an event at Ekurhuleni Kayak Club based at Homestead Dam for young paddlers aged from eight to 18 years on 28 July. Tinyiko achieved third place in her age category at this event.

Tinyiko is part of the Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club who practise at the Power Park Dam in Klipspruit.

The Gauteng Canoe Union School League offers the opportunity for young school-going paddlers to participate in regular races throughout the year, earning points on a sliding scale for every race completed. They host an annual prize giving at the end of the year where individuals, schools and clubs are recognised.

Discussing her selection for the team to compete in Slovakia, Tinyiko said,

“I feel proud of myself, not believing and nervous at the same time. I will work extra hard to uplift South Africa, making my parents, teammates and coach super proud. I can’t wait.”

Tinyiko added that paddling was not her first choice of sport, but she had begun to love it once she participated in competitions. “I grew a strong interest in it and fell in love with the sport. It just brings out the best in me.”

In preparation for the competition, Tinyiko said she needed to focus on her technique and training and build more speed.
