Grade 7 parents of St John’s Prep hosted the inaugural Run for Madiba at St John’s College on the evening of 18 July.
More than 500 runners including boys, parents and staff decked out in glow-in-the-dark gear made their way through the magnificent St John’s campus for the 2.5km or 5km run.
The campus was beautifully lit with coloured lights as marshals, armed with torches, guided runners to ensure that nobody went off course. Giant puppets, including a towering Madiba were there to provide a carnival atmosphere on Mitchell Field.
Prep headmaster Patrick Lees said, “I sincerely hope that this will be the start of an annual event and a Grade 7 legacy that the Class of 2019 has started.”
All proceeds from the event will go towards Grade 7 Leavers Gift as well as the St John’s Prep Academy, which hosts learners from neighbouring inner-city schools on campus three afternoons a week for enrichment in literacy, numeracy and technology.
