A whopping 2 500 smiles lit the faces of runners for another vibrant Pirates 10km Road Race on 14 July.
The road race has a long-standing history, with the current route being followed since the early 1990s. It plays through a scenic route through the tree-lined suburbs of Greenside, Parkview and Westcliff.

It was cold as the horn blew for the start of the race a little after 8am. But with the tightly packed bodies, babies snug in prams and man’s best friends present, everyone warmed up very quickly.

This year included a 5km fun run, and also featured the ever-serious race walkers.
“The run went very well,” said race co-director Brenda Marolen, from Manoni Running Club, who partnered with Pirates Road Running to host the event.
Watch:
“The runners are enthusiastic. It started a bit coldish but it is getting warm now and the numbers are huge.”
Marolen thanked the community for supporting the run.

Race co-director on the part of Pirates, Edwin Smith said, “What’s great about the 10km run, especially if you look at the suburbs where they are running it, it is fairly a fast one. You are in an area of the parks which is quite a green area, full of trees, and I think the runners love this type of area.”

When the runners bounded over the finish line the fun did not stop.
Loads of food stalls and children’s play facilities with jumping castles, a jungle gym, face painting and a treasure hunt kept everyone entertained for hours afterwards.
