Rosebank Linear Park Development coming soon

ROSEBANK – Residents and stakeholders in Rosebank should brace themselves for developments in the next two weeks as the linear park development is set to commence.

Rosebank community residents can expect some developments at the Rosebank Events Park in the next couple of weeks. The piece of land is located on the corner of Keyes Avenue and Walters Street, diagonally opposite the library in Rosebank.

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck posted on the community Facebook pages, saying, “It was formerly leased from the City as a garden to the adjacent property. It will now be taken back by the City of Johannesburg and transformed into a park that can be used for small community-orientated events and exhibitions.”4

He added that the project began a few years back when he became councillor and the Rosebank Management District compiled a transport study for the area and it included what they call linear parks. This was a series of little narrow parks linking the upper part of Rosebank to the lower part.

He added that the cost will be about R9.2 million and after work commences, it could take about three months.

Truluck also shared some information on the background of the project from the City of Johannesburg Property Company, which classifies the project as part of the Rosebank Linear Park Development. He said the City-owned parkland system is seen as integral to the development of Rosebank into a high-density mixed-use node.

The information shared from the City read, “In order to protect and maintain an open space system in the heart of the area, a linear park concept was developed. The project will encourage accessibility to the space for all, activation and arts, comfort and safety, operations and maintenance, community collaboration and sustainable funding streams.”

It was further stated that a process of preparing a development site for a mixed-use development adjacent to the linear park is underway. It is expected that the development cost would exceed R400 million and, in turn, would create about 800 jobs during the construction phase. The development will be implemented over a 24-month period, with the expected completion date being July 2021.

The nature of the work will be paving, grass and tree planting, street furniture, lighting and fencing, and preference will be given to people and SMMEs (small, medium and micro enterprise businesses) who are based in Ward 117 before looking elsewhere in Region B.
