Young archer raises R30 250 for Zoo Lake

PARKVIEW – Grade 7 learner at The Ridge School Olufemi Oyeka raised over R30 000 for upgrades at the public park.

Parkview resident and learner at The Ridge School Olufemi Oyeka has raised R30 250 for Zoo Lake, thanks to the generosity of the local community who sponsored his archery achievements.

The funds raised will be used to support an anti-litter campaign, the recently-launched erosion project around the lake and maintenance required at the duck island.

Chair of the Zoo Lake Users Group Fran Haslam said of Olufemi, “We are so proud of you and salute you and all your efforts in exceeding your goal, and for generously donating all this money to Zoo Lake. What an incredible young leader you are, an inspiration to us all.”

Olufemi began his campaign in March after noticing the litter left behind at the park at the end of a weekend.

“My goal is to raise funds to make Zoo Lake more appealing for locals and tourists and educate users of the park to stop messing up the ecosystem there by littering,” said Olufemi at the start of the project.

Olufemi asked community members to sponsor his successes in four archery competitions between March and May, where he scored a total of 1 192 points, won three medals and achieved Gauteng Provincial Colours for archery.

While he began the campaign aiming to raise R5 000, he was proud to exceed this total by the end of May.
