Teachers and learners team up to raise funds for cyclone victims

GREENSIDE – After the devastating Cyclone Idai hit Mozambique, Greenside High School learners and staff played their part in contributing towards victim relief through a donation.

After the devastating cyclone that hit Mozambique early this year, Greenside High School management encouraged the school to put something together.

According to deputy principal Craig Strauss, “We appealed to our Greenside High learners and staff a while ago to raise funds that would go directly to support the people affected by the cyclone that recently occurred in Mozambique. One of our very own at Greenside High, Nicky Holmboe, had a goal and a vision to raise as much money as possible to help the people living in the harsh aftermath of the cyclone.”

He went on to say that Holmboe teamed up with him and the RCL (Representative Council of Learners) executive committee and held a civvies day at the school to help raise the funds for this cause.

Every learner was asked to contribute R10 or more, totaling the day-end fundraising at R10 000.

“We would like to thank everyone who participated and would like them all to know that their donations are highly appreciated. A special thank you is required to Ms Holmboe and the Greenside RCL team for their time and effort, as well as to our principal Ms. Nicola Whyte for supporting this initiative,” said Strauss.

A cheque for R10 000 was handed over to a delegate from the Gift of the Givers, John Killar, at a special school assembly held in May.
