Wrong turn for robbers

SAXONWOLD – Three suspects who drove off escaping the police after stealing a cell phone, jumped a red traffic light and ended up in a collision.

The universe had other plans for three suspects who stole a cell phone in Saxonwold as their vehicle ended up in a collision.

Rosebank Police Station spokesperson, Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said the Crime Prevention Unit was conducting their regular patrols when they got notified that a robbery had just happened on Oxford Road. The officers immediately made their way to the crime scene and gave chase to the suspects who sped off when they saw the police car.

The three suspects in the red Hyundai Elantra who had just stolen a cell phone drove and went through a red traffic light on Englewold Drive and Oxford Road. The suspects’ car then collided with a Renault vehicle coming from Killarney which led to the suspects’ vehicle to overturn. According to Mdletshe, the two occupants of the Renault vehicle were checked by paramedics and found that they had sustained minor injuries while two of the three suspects are in critical condition at a hospital with one in custody.

“A case of common robbery was opened and we are investigating with the possibility of linking them to many other common robberies. This is a breakthrough in common robbery arrests and we hope more arrests will be made,” said Mdletshe.

He added that a lot of cars are being used in common robberies whereby one suspect drives the car while another one, or two, perpetrate the crime and then jump back into the car and drive off.
