Joburg City encourages account holders to register to receive online bills

JOHANNESBURG – The City encourages people to receive their statements electronically as part of the City's initiative to 'go green'.

The City of Johannesburg is encouraging account holders to register to receive their municipal bills online. The City said the decision to go online is part of the City’s initiative to ‘go green’.

“Printing has become costly for both the City and the environment and receiving a statement via the post is outdated,” said the City of Johannesburg in the statement.

The statement continued that green living contributes towards the general maintenance and protection of the natural ecosystem. The City said it will help to deal effectively with the impact of climate change brought about by global warming and will eliminate the trash generated by utility bills.

“The environment is important to each and every person on the planet. We all need to take action in preserving the environment and its resources, in an effort to create sustainable earth for future generations,” said Johannesburg MMC of Finance Funzela Ngobeni.

The MMC said one of the prime benefits of registering to receive an electronic statement is that it reaches the customer almost immediately, eliminating the fatigue that comes with queuing for hours on end for a municipal bill.

“Online registration offers customers the ability to view backdated statements for up to 12 months, and the convenience to manage their accounts from the comfort of their own space.”

Ngobeni said by opting to receive your municipal account electronically, you help the City reduce the amount of paper used to print statements, thus cutting costs and ensuring environmental sustainability.

“We urge techno-savvy accountholders to help the City create an environmentally friendly workspace by opting to receive their municipal bills electronically. By keeping our environment cleaner, we are actually building a healthier future for ourselves and future generations.”
