WATCH: Olympic medalist Terence Parkin sets off on his 1 120km journey to raise awareness about water safety

MELROSE – Terence Parkin begins his 1 120 km journey to promote water safety.

Olympic medalist and athlete Terence Parkin set off on the first stage of his 1 120km cycling, swimming, running and canoeing journey from the St Vincent School for the Deaf on 4 February.

This is Parkin’s second major journey with the goal to assist Deaf and disabled children to learn to swim. Funds raised through this trip will be donated to the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation South Africa.

Parkin was born deaf and overcame personal challenges to become the most celebrated deaflympic athlete in the world and silver medal winner in the 2000 Summer Olympics.

Children at the St Vincent School for the Deaf encouraged Parkin on his journey with posters showing their support.

Some learners from Kingsmead College also came to the school to wish him well, while learners from Parktown Girls also cheered him on as he passed the school during the first cycling leg of his journey.

Parkin cycled alongside Sipho Qoko. The first leg of the journey is a 200km cycle from Johannesburg to Frankfort.
