The most expensive suburbs to rent property in Gauteng

South Africa’s rental market may be slowing down, but there are still people willing to pay for rentals in some of Gauteng’s most expensive suburbs. Find out what these suburbs are, why they are popular and how much average rentals are.

While the rental market is slowing down according to property experts, there are still a number of people willing to pay for rental property in Gauteng’s wealthy suburbs. As the business hub of the country, Gauteng continues to attract wealthy business people (local and foreign), who are either paid for by their companies or happy to pay the rental themselves. Additionally, with land expropriation currently a hot topic across the country, a number of potential buyers are opting to rent, until things have become more clear.

We take a look at some of the most expensive Gauteng suburbs to rent property in.

Melrose

A sought after suburb, Melrose is a leafy and quiet area home to some of Johannesburg’s top schools, shopping centres, art galleries and family-friendly parks. The areas in Melrose with the most expensive rentals include Rosebank and Parktown, offering established, spacious properties.

Rental costs:

4 bedroom house – Up to R39 000 per month.

2 bedroom apartment – Up to R35 000 per month.

Dainfern

Home to the luxurious Dainfern Lifestyle and Golf Estate, Dainfern Private College, and large free standing properties, Dainfern is a popular suburb among Gauteng’s wealthy. With its safe environment, and close proximity to upmarket shops, the suburb is occupied by local celebrities, business people, artists and foreign nationals.

Rental costs:

4 bedroom house – Up to R80 000 per month.

2 bedroom apartment – Up to R18 000 per month.

Hyde Park

Another well-established suburb with large properties, Hyde Park offers renters an opulent lifestyle. Ranked as one of South Africa’s top suburbs, with indoor swimming pools, home gyms, large balconies and expansive gardens as standard features, it’s no surprise that it is a popular choice for Gauteng’s wealthy.

Rental costs:

4 bedroom house – Up to R90 000 per month.

2 bedroom apartment – Up to R36 000 per month.

With so much on offer, it’s no wonder these areas are popular even though they are some of the most expensive on the rental market.
