Houghton house robber arrested by Johannesburg police

HOUGHTON – The victim escaped by jumping over the wall and alerted a security guard.

A man has been arrested by the Johannesburg police and his accomplices are still on the run after a case of house robbery and assault was reported to the police.

This according to the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Flying Squad, Sergeant Desmond Subramoney who said they have launched a manhunt for the accomplices.

Subramoney said the incident occurred on 4th Avenue in Houghton after a victim was robbed of his belongings and assaulted inside his property. “The victim was walking to his home from the mall and when he opened the gate, two unknown suspects pounced on him and entered the property,” he said.

“They beat him up and asked for the safe. The victim managed to flee and escaped by jumping over the wall and alerted a security guard.”

The police were immediately contacted and a quick response by the Johannesburg Flying Squad resulted in one suspect cornered and arrested with an unlicensed 9mm vector pistol in his possession. Subramoney added that the other two suspects jumped into a getaway vehicle and sped off.

The firearm was confiscated and Subramoney said the police investigation continues to determine whether the suspect is linked to other crimes in and around the area. The suspect faces charges of house robbery, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. “He was remanded into the Norwood Police Station’s holding cells and the 25-year-old is expected to appear soon at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
