Running for the community
PARKWOOD – Local running club aims to serve the community with a fun family run at Zoo Lake.
Plans are underway for a family run that goes through Zoo Lake.
This was revealed by Matodzi Tshidzumba, the chairperson of Rocky Road Runners, also known as Rockies, which is based at Zoo Lake Sports Club.
He was speaking at a recent Saturday time trial which the club has hosted for free for the community every week for 34 years.
“In conjunction with City Parks, we want to start a family run inside Zoo Lake, which will roughly be 4.5km. We just need clearance now,” he said.
The idea is that the run will be held three or four times per week and attract families to run or walk through the picturesque park with their children and or dogs.
“We are working with the Zoo Lake Users Committee and the restaurant to make this happen and maybe have meals at the run too.”
Tshidzumba added that the club aimed to promote healthy living in the community of Zoo Lake.
Developments regarding the family run will be reported on as they unfold, but in the meantime, Tshidzumba encouraged the community to attend its Saturday 5km time trials.
The time trials start at 7.30am and people can run or walk at their own pace.
Rockies also hosts an annual General Fox Memorial Road Race, with 5km, 10km and 21.1km routes.
There are also plans for a second annual run but these plans are not in an advanced stage yet.
Lastly, Tshidzumba encouraged people to join Rockies as members, reasons being that the fees are minimal, the area around Zoo Lake is scenic and great for running, members can run five club runs for free each year, breakfast and drinks are served to members at local club runs and travel and accommodation to the Comrades Marathon is paid for by the club.
“We look after our members,” Tshidzumba concluded.
