The Wanderers Club has officially launched a cycling club sports section, which was announced at a fundraiser for the Support SA Talent Project Road Cycling Series awards hosted by the club.
Guest speakers included the voice of cycling, Phil Liggett and South African champion and world tour cyclist, Daryl Impey.
Vice-chair of the Wanderers Sports Club, Colin Warner said that when the Wanderers Club was started in 1888, cycling was the club’s largest sporting section.
“It is exciting to be returning to our roots and once again be involved in a growing and dynamic sport and in the development of young riders through the Support SA Talent Road Cycling Series,” said Warner.
He explained that members of the Wanderers Cycling Club will give cyclists of all ages the opportunity to become part of one of Joburg’s most established clubs, which will also be affiliated to Cycling South Africa.
The club will be hosting a cycling holiday camp at its cricket ovals from 10 to 12 December between 8am and 4pm daily. This is an opportunity for young cyclists between the ages of six and 13 to try out their skills and learn new ones from members of the top professional cycling team, Pro-Touch.
The Road Cycling Series was launched earlier this year to provide a platform for aspiring South African cyclists to receive recognition for their achievements and performances on the local stage.
The breakfast fundraiser recognised South Africa’s top locally-competing professional road cyclists and teams with the 2018 Support SA Talent Cycling Series awards.
Wanderers Club donated trophies to the following people:
- Elite men – Jaydé Julius (Team Pro-Touch)
- Series winner – Elite Ladies – Carla Oberholzer (Demacon Ladies)
- Series winner – Junior Men – Tiano da Silva (Team Pro-Touch)
- Series winner – Junior Ladies – Tiffany Keep (Silverback bikes).
