A request for more ‘good Samaritans’

CRAIGHALL – An epilepsy centre in Craighall Park depends on donors to keep afloat and this festive season they need more assistance in maintaining the foundation and taking care of the patients.

Reea Foundation was established in 1935 and is a non-profit organisation caring for adults living with epilepsy and mild mental disorders.

The foundation, based in Craighall Park, currently accommodates 39 adults and provides a well-managed residential centre, with 24-hour nursing care.

In a report on 23 April this year, the Rosebank Killarney Gazette stated that keeping the home afloat tends to be financially strenuous and the centre needs more donors for sustainability. In the report, centre manager Alex Sheffield said the centre costs about R5 million a year to be maintained.

“We’ve had a few break-ins and we’ve had to spend money on improving our security facilities because we have a few companies renting in the centre and the money we get has to be contributed to helping the people at the home,” said Sheffield.

He added that the money generated from the internal projects was not enough as the professional nurses are hired and the medication for the patients is costly.

With the help of ‘Good Samaritans’ they re-enamelled the bathrooms and installed a few new taps and also installed new gutters throughout the hostel.

The Reea Foundation wish list includes:

  • Beds
  • Admin block needs waterproofing and painting
  • Nurses station requires structural renovations
  • Replacing the existing inadequate security fence along York Avenue with a more secure one and replacing the existing gates.
