Paving on 7th Avenue Parktown North is almost complete

PARKTOWN NORTH – 7th Avenue in Parktown North will soon be more walkable.

The Parktown North Ratepayers and Residents Association (PNRA)is pleased to announce that the paving of the pavements on 7th Avenue is almost complete following four months of work from the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

Chairperson of the association Lee-Ann Louverdis said the work was almost complete now and she was pleased with the progress. “Before this project, the pavement was not walkable with manholes that were not properly aligned and asphalt dipping and uneven. It was not safe to walk on this pavement, especially at night,” said Louverdis.

She added that the new paved walkway would make the pavement far more walkable as it serves as the main thoroughfare between Parktown North, Parkhurst and Rosebank. “It is a lot easier to replace paving as opposed to asphalt when something is repaired. Paving provides an easier, long-term pavement solution.”

She thanked JRA for their hard work and cooperation with the association over the past few months. “JRA has fantastic and we have had a great working relationship with them and the contractors. We have a weekly site meeting with them and all residents in the area get a weekly newsletter updating them on the progress. When water pipes have been dug up, the issues have been resolved quickly.”

She also believes the new paving will uplift the area and contribute to the reduction of crime.

Community liaison officer Julia Modibedi said, “Working with the [association] was very helpful as they assisted us to communicate with residents.”

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck said, “The new pavements will make a huge difference to link Parkhurst, Parktown North and Rosebank. They will also go a long way to improving walkability in Rosebank since we need to walk to reduce traffic… On an interesting note, this project [must] have cost at least R5 million, which is a major capital expenditure.”

While the north side of the road is already complete, Louverdis hopes the south side will be completed by 14 December this year.
