Westdene resident Janina Pechova launches children’s book The Sock Rat in Rosebank

This is the third children's book that the Westdene resident has written.

Songs about colourful socks and an artistic rat filled the David Krut Bookstore in Jan Smuts Avenue as author and illustrator Janina Pechova launched her children’s book The Sock Rat.

This is the third children’s book that the Westdene resident has written.

She said her husband’s experience with a rat at home inspired the book. “He had hung his running shorts on the washing line and later in the day he saw them disappearing up the gutter never to be seen again,” said Pechova.

Through the book, Pechova illustrated a cute, friendly-looking rat with a desire to become an artist. His inspiration is the colourful socks on wash lines across the city.

“He doesn’t consider himself a thief,” chuckled Pechova. “He makes art with the socks to make people happy.”

Reflecting on her journey through the storyline, she said, “It’s enjoyable to come up with an idea and make it better by embellishing the basic premise to make it more exciting with other twists.”

Pechova grew up in the breathtaking city of Prague in the Czech Republic where she developed her earliest inspiration for art. She later majored in fine art, printmaking, science, and modern languages.

The storybook is well put together with large drawings and short lines of text on each page. It has also been translated by publishers Bumble Books into Afrikaans.
