Children at St Teresa’s Mercy School in Craighall were educated about the importance of keeping the environment clean in an informative discussion led by Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams and Ward 90 committee member Dianne Webb on 20 September.
Williams and Webb arrived at the school with plastic bags and rakes as they gave a short presentation to girls between the ages of four and nine.
“We can all ensure that future generations enjoy the earth by cleaning up litter in our neighbourhoods,” said Williams.
Webb asked the girls about what chores they do at home to keep their homes clean. She also encouraged them to step out of their homes and clean the pavements, pools and public parks they visit. Webb asked the girls to get permission from their parents to join the monthly A Re Sebetseng campaigns initiated by Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba.
Principal Lynne Elfick said, “It’s good for the girls to realise that we belong to a community. A Re Sebetseng is a wonderful project that the mayor has put together. The more people that can get involved, the more beautiful we can make this City.”
She added that St Teresa’s hopes to instil a culture where children respect and care for the environment and become responsible citizens who have compassion for others.
