Residents encouraged to take part in World Cleanup Day
JOBURG – Residents are encouraged to clean up their public spaces on World Cleanup Day on 15 September.
Residents from around the city are encouraged to participate in the World Cleanup Day campaign, which takes place on 15 September.
It is estimated that each year eight million tonnes of litter end up in the environment, causing a serious threat to people, wildlife, soil, water and air. World Cleanup Day is a call to action for the public to take real action in solving this waste problem.
This year, the City of Johannesburg’s A Re Sebetseng programme, which calls on residents to take part in a monthly clean-up, has partnered with Global Citizen to host a massive clean-up campaign to encourage more residents to participate.
This campaign will include educating residents about reducing plastic usage and encourage recycling waste. This year, participation by residents will be encouraged through a variety of clean-up initiatives, including annual Spruit Day clean-up will be hosted on 22 September.
Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans said, “Global Citizen is so happy to be bringing Mandela 100 to Johannesburg, working with the City to promote activism within the community. Efforts like A Re Sebetseng provide opportunities for each of us to take actions which promote a healthy planet and environment, a key part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”
On the day residents will have the opportunity to join Mayor Herman Mashaba, councillors, city departments and regional offices with the goal to create a cleaner city. The City will provide bags and gloves to all participants which can be collected at city walk-in centres, depots, clinics and libraries.
“Johannesburg is the country’s fastest-growing metropolitan area and it is expected to become a megacity, with a population in excess of 10 million people, within the next 15 years,” said Mashaba.
“In a City of this size, it is essential that residents and the administration work together to maintain the urban environment. That is why we started A Re Sebetseng – to encourage residents to be part of creating the kind of City that everyone would like to live in.”
