Career guidance for the under-resourced courtesy of Roedean Academy

PARKTOWN – Girls from Barnato School were given intensive and interactive career guidance by Roedean Academy.

Every second year, youngsters from under-resourced schools make their way to Roedean School for a careers afternoon initiative.

This year the initiative, courtesy of Roedean Academy, accommodated the youngster from Barnato Park High School. Director of the academy, Sandi McCallum said that they introduced the children to a large variety of careers that they could pursue at university. “We choose various careers with a lot of people presenting from our school and others from outside. For instance, we have a past academy student presenting.”

Former academy member and insurance consultant, Pinkie Ndaba said she attended the career expo every now and then to give advice to the girls.

“Options of going to varsity after high school are not always there, so I encourage the girls to look at the bigger picture of finding a job and then being able to pay for studies thereafter,” she said.

The children went around asking questions related to their career interests and took home some goodie bags with relevant equipment. One of the Grade 12 youngsters from Barnato School, Joyce Munangai, said they had printed out their CVs and handed them in with the hope of getting internships or jobs the following year.

Another five-year academy member Rosinah Mohlapamaswi said, “The academy has helped me a lot because the last time I went to Germany, McCallum bought me sneakers and some warm clothes, so I am very grateful.”
