UPDATE: Argyle Avenue’s water-wasting pipe finally replaced

CRAIGHALL – Residents will be delighted to know that Argyle Avenue is back on track.

Update, 29 June, 1pm:

A burst pipe on Argyle Avenue has finally been replaced after more than three weeks of wasting water.

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams and Joburg Water spokesperson Isaac Dhludhlu visited the site while plumbers were installing a new, functional pipe.

Depot manager at Joburg Water, Nkosinathi Xaba, was also onsite and said that he realises water has been going to waste – at their cost.

The water was off in the vicinity of Argyle Avenue for a few hours during and after the installation of the pipe.

Williams was happy that the pipe was sorted out at long last and that there was progress after having escalated the matter to Joburg Water. “I really appreciate Isaac and Nkosinathi taking the time to be onsite.”

Dhludhlu said, “Now that the pipe is… fixed, I think it is time to call the Johannesburg Road Agency to come and fix the road.”

Residents will be glad to know that Argyle Avenue is back to the free-flowing route it was before.

Earlier report, 20 June, 1.13pm

After more than a week since the appearance of a deep and muddy pothole, the water is still leaking from the underground pipe on Argyle Avenue, around the corner of Alexandra Avenue, in Craighall Park.

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams accompanied Rosebank Killarney Gazette on 14 June to inspect a huge pothole that is currently causing disruptions and traffic congestion.

The ground had been deeply dug up and the hole is filled with water. Johannesburg Water spokesperson Isaac Dhludhlu confirmed on 15 June that the pipe will be mended later that day but to date, there are still no changes.

Williams escalated the matter to the Joburg Water and was promised it will be fixed soon.

“I don’t like to leave things unattended. I always tell residents or whoever sees it first to please report it and just send me the reference number so I can follow up until a matter has been resolved,” said Williams.

It appears as though the men who were at the site on Friday confirmed to Williams that the pipe would need to be replaced.

“There is no agreement to replace the pipe. It is a suggestion from workers because it would require budget approval. The guys who are doing the welding said the pipe is rotten and needs to be replaced as soon as possible, which will need more digging,” explained the councillor.

Dhludhlu confirmed that his department has ordered a new pipe and the replacement will be performed immediately after the delivery.

“I am not sure about the time of delivery of the new pipe but as soon as it is received from our side, we will send the team to come fix it,” confirmed Dhludhlu.

The huge pothole which takes up half of the road has been causing disruptions and congestion, especially during peak-hour traffic.
