Gugu Gumede spills the beans

ROSEBANK – Get to a know a bit more about your favourite Uzalo actress, Gugu Gumede.

In an exclusive interview, held at Crowne Plaza in Rosebank, Gugu Gumede highlighted how her love and passion for acting emerged at the age of nine and ‘spoke it into existence’ when she told a friend that she wants to be an actor for a living.

Currently starring in one of South Africa’s popular telenovelas Uzalo as Ma’Mlambo, Gumede will forever be grateful to the soapy Generations for giving her exposure back in 2014.

“I used to create little scenarios, pretend that something has happened and cry. My family would believe my act and that’s when I knew I could act, although my family hated it,” she said.

Stepping in and out of character comes naturally for Gumede, especially with her theatre experience, her fans are always astonished when they see her off-set.

“If people didn’t get shocked whenever we crossed paths, then I would have known that I’m not delivering as an actress. Fans should be able to tell the difference between Gugu and Ma’Mlambo.”

She says that there are both similarities as well as differences between her and the character she portrays on Uzalo. The character she plays is more of a churchgoer, man-stealer and middle-aged woman who is a gossip monger.

“The similarities we have is that we grew up in the rural areas. She is also more outspoken than I am in real life and cultured. She is always after her friends’ men but me on the other side, I never do that. But I find her character justifiable,” she explained.

Gumede said she has a lot in store for her Uzalo fans and added that she wants to dominate the acting industry.

“I have so much in the pipeline. I cannot reveal too much but I plan on putting Africa on the map and telling stories that matter,” she concludes.
