Sports and Recreation to roll out swimming galas in heated pools around the City

JOBURG – The MMC is urging residents to be on the lookout for posters relating to these events and to participate in these galas.

The department of community development will soon start embarking on swimming galas at the heated pools, including the Linden swimming pool, across the City of Johannesburg to create and encourage a culture of aquatic sports.

MMC for Community Development, Nonhlanhla Sifumba, said the main focus will be on the previously forgotten areas of the City. “Participation in the galas is encouraged from school children and youth in line with the pro-poor development agenda of the City.”

Of the City’s 58 pools, eight are heated and open throughout the year.

“As the cold pools are closed at the end of April, the City will carry out required repairs and maintenance essential to ensuring that there are no disruptions that will cause the closure of the pools during the swimming season,” Sifumba said.

The swimming gala at the Linden swimming pool is set for 27 May from 9am until 3pm.

The second gala will be at the Pimville pool on 28 May again from 9am until 3pm.

“I encourage members of the public to be on the lookout for posters relating to these events and to participate in these galas.”
