Live a healthy and eating disorder-free life

PARKTOWN NORTH – According to health statistics, at least 53 per cent of 13-year-old girls are unhappy with their bodies and this number keeps increasing by the time the girls reach the age of 17.

The Wellness Awareness, a medical retail store hosted an event themed ‘How She Glows’, a conscious eating programme, where healthy eating was discussed with more depth to save fellow women from forcing thinness by going on yo-yo diets and starving themselves.

The programme is focused on teaching women how to develop intuitive eating and actually enjoy it, and also, to bring about balance and to set a foundation of structured eating in order to know what full feels like and what satisfaction feels like.

“The How She Glows programme is very new, it’s only two weeks old. Women should be taught that they can actually fall in love with their bodies and how it was given to you and be very content,” said fire tonic brewmaster, Lauren Marsh.

Marsh spoke about her eating disorder ordeal while growing up and said it had put her health at risk. A number of health-conscious women posed questions to Marsh about their eating habits.

“About 20 years of my life, my only goal was losing weight and become thin and I really thought that if I didn’t lose weight, I will feel like a failure.”

Marsh also said one in five women have or will struggle with an eating disorder, which is described as ‘illnesses that are characterised by irregular eating habits and severe distress or concern about body weight or shape.’

As women, our biggest fear is gaining weight and no matter how thin you are, there commonly is a sort of dissatisfaction or insecurity, but on 2 May, Marsh rubbished the assumption that every woman is supposed to look like a doll to be considered beautiful.

“How do you learn to love your body in a culture that has more than 30 000 of dietary models? No woman can lose weight by punishing their bodies. Women should not deprive themselves of food they love,” she said. “If you feel like a piece of cake on a certain day then go for it, just don’t overdo it.”

She also added that chronic dieting can cause inflammations, leaky guts, food intolerances and candida overgrowth because of low stomach acid because your metabolism is not digesting any nutrients.

For a solution in eating intuitively, Marsh has suggested an Aceso Fire Tonic, which helps to break down food, instead of cutting down your favourites. “The fire tonics also stops mucous production, bloating, reflux as well as feeds the good bacteria in your colon. It is a lifesaver for people who struggle with digesting food.”
