Storm Water Drains project underway in Parkview

PARKVIEW – Parkview residents let their actions speak louder as they embark on the Storm Water Drains project to combat floods.

One of the Parkview Residents Association’s (PRA) projects is the Storm Water Drains which they embarked on, on 19 April.

This project aims at clearing all blocked drains of rubbish which may result in flooding on the streets.

The team, which comprises of residents, put on their gear in the early hours of the morning and started digging away.

These drains are located on the edge of driveways but the work being done does not affect traffic much. The drains in Parkview seem not to have been attended to in a long time based on the amount of rubble the workers dug up.

“During the rainy season water comes down our slope-bound area from Westcliff and may divert into someone’s house, hence the need to ensure fully functional water drains,” said Theresa Gibbon Marketing and Communications liaison officer.

The PRA team of four gets paid about R330 per person per day and they are provided with lunch, which is supplied by the residents. Today, the team worked on at least five water drains. They work in conjunction with the Johannesburg Roads Agency which, depending on how tough the blocks are, will send in their Jet Vac machine.

“Work of this magnitude really depends on the block material and amount of rubble underneath them so it may take from two days to a month to finish,” Gibbon said. So far they have managed to do about 50 drains and they hope to finish by the end of 2018.

She also alludes to the fact that they welcome any monetary donations and lunches in order to keep the workers going.

Parkview residents decided to be more assertive and active in activities aimed at improving their suburb and they hope other suburbs will be inspired to carry out similar campaigns.
