Greenside to receives new water pipes

GREENSIDE – Out with the old pipes, in with the new pipes as Greenside area's pipe problems come to an end.

The Greenside area will be getting replacement water pipes from Johannesburg Water’s Infrastructure Planning Department, Ward 87 councillor, Bridget Steer has confirmed.

“The project was scheduled to begin in March but will start from the end of April to the beginning of May, and the digging has not started as yet,” she said.

The project implementation is set to be run for a period of two months.

Barnton Road, 4th Avenue and Victory Road are some of the identified places around the area and are prioritised for pipe replacement in the current financial year budget.

The project is to be implemented in Greenside, which falls under Region B of the Johannesburg City.

The implementation of this project was triggered by frequent pipe bursts experienced in the area and was caused by the aged nature of the pipelines.

The works are to be completed by learner contractors on the Vukuphile Learner Contractor Development Programme. The aim of the project is to get the contractor learners ready and to enable them to upgrade their Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) from level CE to 4CE.

Finally, these areas will have uPVC Class 16 high impact pipes. The scope of work for this project will entail the replacement of 10 100m of existing pipes with 110mm and 160mm diameter uPVC pipes using the open trench construction method. Horizontal directional drilling (a trenchless method) will be used at all road crossings to avoid disruption of traffic.

The task will also include connecting newly installed pipes to existing pipes and replacing of existing water meters.
