Going green to sustain earth for future generations to come

ROSEBANK – Being eco-friendly can be rewarding in many different ways, and is beneficial for sustaining earth.

Taking care of the planet is in the spotlight right now, and in light of this, The Glass Recycling Company has acknowledged 10 organisations that contribute to the earth’s wellbeing.

Giles Pub, The Peech Hotel, Zoo Lake Sports Club and Pirates Club were some of the 10 hospitality sectors that were visited, with handovers of engraved glass trophies for being super eco-friendly over the past year.

The CEO of the company, Shabeer Jhetam also urged more hospitality businesses to recycle glass containers this year.

“We encourage the hospitality sector to recycle their glass bottles and jars and, while we are impressed by the trend of ‘being green’, we need more commitment from bars, restaurants and hotels. Ultimately, we need these venues to live their green credentials,” said Jhetam.

He said he wanted to see others rising to the challenge of making sure that the world we live in is in good hands. “We encourage these establishments to continue recycling all their glass and take it to the next level, as it has a progressive impact on the environment.

“We challenge others to start recycling, as it is one of the easiest ways to have a positive impact on the world in which we live.”

The company is South Africa’s official organisation that promotes glass recycling. Their strategy is to also educate people that returnable bottles can be reused, as well as developing entrepreneurship and creating jobs.

Having been in existence for 12 years, The Glass Recycling Company has increased the glass recycling rate from 18 per cent to 41.5 per cent.

Marketing director for Pirates Club, Bradley Nelson said being rewarded by the recycling company was a pleasant surprise. “We work with them and they have provided us with a glass bank where all glass containers can be stored and returned to them. So we are happy to have received the trophy.”

Nelson added that it is all about teamwork and they return any type of glass container and dispose of non-returnable ones.

“This is our contribution to actually give back and it’s everyone’s duty. [It’s become] second nature, as our manager has instilled the value of making a contribution by recycling,” he concluded.

Manager at The Zoo Lake Sports Club, Morag Maynard, said they were also pleased to have received the glass plaque and are happy to have a hand in giving back. “We are all passionate about keeping the size of the municipal dumpsites down and re-using items as and when possible, as we see, on a daily basis, the impact of pollution on our immediate surrounds,” said Maynard.
