VIDEOS: Joburg Zoo turns a big 114

SAXONWOLD – Hundreds of people arrived to celebrate 114 years with the Johannesburg Zoo.

Residents and visitors from across Joburg visited the Joburg Zoo as it celebrated 114 years in March.

The birthday celebrations have been marked by a variety of exciting daily activities in the zoo throughout the month. This is meant to promote the accessibility of the zoo to all the diverse people.

The #ZooTrot was thoroughly enjoyable as walkers, runners, young and old were able to absorb the majesty of the animals while keeping healthy. The 5km walk around the zoo was kicked off with none other than a ‘Happy Birthday’ song and cake cutting. Children and adults alike were encouraged to dress up as their favourite animal. A few dogs, elephants and giraffes were spotted.

Councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, City of Joburg, spoke about the achievements at the zoo. “The birthday celebration events are also a way of encouraging residents to get involved in protecting the welfare of animals.”

She explained that the zoo is one of the ways that the City raises revenue for the upkeep of our manmade jungle. The management and staff at the zoo have worked tirelessly to make it one of the best attractions that Joburg has to offer.

The trot finished off with a gigantic cake so that everyone could join in on the carnivalesque festivities.

  • Joining a #HeritageTour to see how the zoo has evolved over the 114 years
  • Bringing along a treat for the animals to mark the #ZooBirthdayWish
  • Encouraging corporates to #AdoptAnimals
