Coaching duo readies for RowSA awards announcements

BRAAMFONTEIN – The 2017 RowSA Awards gears up for a stellar evening of crowning the cream of the crop in South African rowing.

Wits rowing coach Daniel Trollip and his boat club volunteer coach colleague, Kyle Hanck are savouring the prospect of being recognised at the 2017 Rowing South Africa (RowSA) awards.

The awards recognise the various athletic, coaching and administrative federations affiliated to RowSA. Winners will be announced on 3 February at an event at the Rock the Boat Regatta at Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve (situated 22km north-east of Pretoria).

WUBC coaches Kyle Hanck, Ruth Oldert and Sloane Steinhobel.

Trollip is in the running for the Junior Coach of the Year award, while Hanck hopes for a favourable outcome in the Volunteer of the Year category.

RowSA received many nomination entries from all of its members including schools, universities, junior, senior and provincial clubs as well as from its constituent members.

“The awards committee would like to place on record its appreciation to these clubs for their nominations,” RowSA said in a statement.

“The calibre of the nominees has been excellent and this has highlighted the phenomenal talent that exists in our federation.”

Trollip, who also coaches St Mary’s Open girls, guided them to familiar championship status in 2016/17. This, after leading the school to their 10th Boat Race title in Port Alfred, Eastern Cape in September last year, coupled with a stellar run at the 2017 SA championships in which the Open girls triumphed in every category.

The Wits boat rowing club enjoy some fun at the dress up dinner at the USSA-Rowing Sprint Regatta last year.

Hanck, meanwhile, has been a valuable contributor to the Wits University Boat Club (WUBC) as a volunteer. He told Rosebank Killarney Gazette that he was chuffed his role has been recognised even though he didn’t expect it. “Firstly, I feel humbled and honoured that the club took the initiative and recognised my work by putting me forward for the award,” said Hanck.

“That’s always the cherry on top [even though] I don’t do this for the recognition or fame and definitely not for money, but more to help out a sport that I love and a sport that is in need.”
