A video circulating on social media has shown a woman being robbed while at a petrol station in Illovo.
The video shows two masked men on either side of the car, taking her belongings from the front passenger seat. The woman can be seen taking off her earrings while the other man makes off with her handbag. The men then hop into a grey H1 Hyundai which is parked directly behind the woman’s vehicle.
Captain Molefe Mogodi, the spokesperson for the Bramley Police Station confirmed that a case of armed robbery had been opened and was being investigated.
In recent months, there has been a spate of hijackings at petrol stations all around Johannesburg. However, Mogodi told the Rosebank Killarney Gazette that he could not comment on whether or not there was a connection.
Tips to avoid becoming a robbery victim while at a petrol station:
- While at a petrol station it is important to remain vigilant and not let your guard down or use your phone while you are waiting as potential hijackers might see this as an opportunity
- Ideally motorists should try to vary the time they use a petrol station as well as the route they follow as this will make their movements more difficult to follow
- Ensure your doors are locked at all times. If you need to unlock your doors to open your petrol cap remember to lock them again afterwards
- Keep all your valuables locked in your boot as this will make it more difficult for potential robbers to notice.
