National Children’s Theatre presents a Seussified Christmas Carol

PARKTOWN – A Seussified Christmas Carol will tell the tale of Ebeneezer Scrooge in classic Dr Seuss rhymes.

The National Children’s Theatre in Parktown is showcasing its version of A Seussified Christmas Carol this festive season.

Playwright Peter Bloedel has reinvented the story in rhyming couplets to remind the audience of the rhymes of Dr Seuss.

The show, funded by a grant from the National Lotteries Commission, will run until 23 December.

A Seussified Christmas Carol tells the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge, a mean and cold-hearted man, even at Christmas time.

This, however, changes when the ghost of his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley, when he comes to warn him about the ugliness of his greed.

Marley gives him advance notice of the visits he is going to have from different times in his life – Christmas past, Christmas present and Christmas future.

“Peter Bloedel has cleverly created a whimsical story that is perfect for the entire family. He adopts a rhyme scheme that everyone recognises and loves. Parents can rest assured that their children will find the language most accessible and great fun,” said National Children’s Theatrechief executive officer, Moira Katz.

The production will feature Daniel Geddes as Scrooge, Nomonde Matiwane, Cassius Davids as narrator and Nieke Lombard as Mrs. Cratchit. Jessica Foli, Alessandro Mendes and Blaine Shore will be play various roles including the ghosts of Christmas past, present and feature.

The creative team includes artistic director Francois Theron, costume and set designer Sarah Roberts and lighting designer Jane Gosnell.

After every performance, the audience will have the opportunity to meet Scrooge and the rest of the cast and have their photos taken.

The show will run for about an hour with a short intermission from 10.30am to 2.30pm during the school holidays.
