Family Life Centre in Parkwood celebrates a successful year of helping others

PARKWOOD – The year-end function celebrates all the hard work and community outreach by the staff at the Family Life Centre.

The Family Life Centre, a non-profit organisation in Parkwood which provides a wide variety of services, hosted their year-end function to celebrate the hard work of its employees.

The function, which was held on 28 November, hosted councillors, mediators and educators from the Parkwood office as well as those from offices in Alexandra, Diepsloot, Ivory Park, Lenasia South, Soweto and Westbury.

The centre offers counselling, mediation, support groups and parenting skills. Bernadette Ryan Williams, the marketing manager of the centre said, “Everything to do with relationships and family, that’s what we specialise in, all the money we generate from our services goes toward the disadvantaged communities.”

Within the disadvantaged communities, the councillors help with single-parent support groups, give support to children who are at risk and empower women to help others. The Family Life Centre was able to provide services to over 76 000 people in the past year.

The year-end party also acted as a farewell to the interns who have been working at the centre this year and a welcome to the new interns who will join next year.

“We’ve had a great year from a project point of view, we’ve done a huge amount of work in communities and the outreach has been huge but it’s been hard from a financial point of view,” said Pam Gillingham, the director of the centre. “We need lots more donations.”

Gillingham thanked all the staff for their hard work and dedication throughout the year. “It’s been a long year and a good year in many ways, having the extent of outreach we have and all our programmes and I’m always very proud to be a part of this organisation.”

Vicky Berrington, who is on the board of management, also thanked all the staff members for their work. “You guys have done an incredible job, your dedication, your commitment, your loyalty and your passion is just incredible so thank you so much.”
