Parkview celebrates six-year conviction of thief

PARKTOWN – A 33-year-old man has been convicted to six years imprisonment for theft, housebreaking and possession of suspected stolen goods.

 

A 33-year-old man has been convicted to six years in prison for housebreaking, theft and possession of suspected stolen property.

On 6 November the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court found Alex Chawe guilty, following his arrest on 21 September.

Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, spokesperson for the Parkview Police Station said, “Detective Constable Mmeli Mzolo was investigating the case docket and through his investigative skills and the evidence that was presented before the court, he managed to secure a sentence.”

Station commander of the Parkview Police Station, Colonel Theledi Gopane welcomed the sentence and emphasised that all crimes reported within the Parkview precinct will be investigated so as to ensure the community’s safety.

Chawe was arrested with two other men in Johannesburg central. One of the suspects, posing as a City Power official, was given access to a house in Parktown by a domestic worker. The man said that a new meter needed to be installed, however, after the man left, the housekeeper noticed that some items were missing. Some of the stolen goods included a laptop, camera and iPhone.

Sibeko said, “The owner of the house was informed and the police were contacted. The stolen iPhone was traced and it showed that the suspects were driving to the Johannesburg CBD.”

Sergeant Maliyakhe Nzama and Constable Padima Makhudu followed the information and they stopped the suspect’s vehicle at Lillian Ngoyi and Miriam Makeba streets in Johannesburg central. Following a search of the vehicle, the officers discovered two laptops and a cellphone. A City Power jacket and card were also retrieved.
