Kingsmead Junior School places third at Inter-Schools Prestige Athletics

ROSEBANK – The junior students placed third among nine other schools in the competition.

Children from Kingsmead College’s junior school participated in the annual Prestige Athletics meeting at St Stithians College on 27 October, placing third among nine schools.

The event, which hosted nine private girls schools, began with a rocky start as bad weather was expected throughout the day but cleared up as the events began.

Annelie Koekemoer, the head of sports for the junior school said, “Our preparation started early in September with our inter-house athletics meeting and weekly meetings thereafter, where all the athletes included in the squad participated.”

The field events took place first with the children from grades 3 to 7 participating in the long jump and high jump. Long jump athletes, Kaitlyn Brown and Lucy Davis, from grades 3 and 4 respectively, both came in second. Natalie Morris, a Grade 6 student, won her hurdle race with a time of 12:55. Natalie was also placed third in both the 100m and 200m races.

“Jade Anderson was the most outstanding Grade 3 athlete, winning both the 60m and the 100m. Our Grade 4 group performed extremely well in their 80m event, with two first places for Carys Glyn-Jones and Francesca Druce and third places for Morgan Easter and Lucy Davis,” said Koekemoer.

Neo Shibambo came in second for both the 80m and 150m races and Elizabeth Oelofsen in Grade 7 achieved a third place in her 200m race. “The Grade 6 group outdid themselves with a first place and a third for Paula Prinsloo and Tasmiyya Bham in the 100m event. The highlight of the day was the relay events; that assured our team the third place.”
