Non-competitive runner Joan Kent-Smith speaks about her 28th race in the Spar Women’s Challenge

EMMARENTIA – Both casual runners and seasoned athletes lined up for the Spar Women's Race.

As the attention zoned in on the Mark’s Park Sports Club for the 6th and final leg in the Spar Women’s Challenge Grand Prix on 8 October, there was an air of excitement and competitiveness.

Both casual runners and seasoned athletes lined up at the start of the acclaimed race, with pensioners aged over 70 eager to show that they, like their younger counterparts, were keen to brave the challenge of Joburg’s most beautiful race.

Joan Kent-Smith, a 78-year-old retiree, who previously worked at Spar for 15 years and during which time she participated in every Joburg race, has been retired for the past 13 years and has participated religiously since then too. This past week she ran in her 28th Spar Women’s Race.
