New R5 coin honours the centenary of the birth of OR Tambo
JOBURG – The coin depicts Tambo during the days of his presidency of the African National Congress.
The South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) is honouring the centenary of the birth of Oliver Reginald Kaizana Tambo with a new R5 coin.
“The late OR Tambo played a pivotal role in the country’s struggle against apartheid. His stewardship of the liberation movement galvanised world opinion against the apartheid,” the Sarb said.
“This is the first time that the South African Mint is releasing a non-circulating, collectable legal tender coin made from the same base metal used in other South African circulation coins.”
The coin depicts Tambo during the days of his presidency of the African National Congress (ANC).
