Sleeping bags for homeless

ROSEBANK – Kingsmead College hosted a Mandela Day event that taught volunteers how to make sleeping bags from recycled materials.

Kingsmead College, in collaboration with Community Hours, hosted a Make and Donate a Sleeping Bag event in order to commemorate Mandela Day.

The event took place at 67-minute intervals in which people would pay R67 and then construct the sleeping bags in groups.

The sleeping bags are made from newspaper, recycled plastic and canvas bags made from billboard material and will be distributed to homeless people living in Rosebank. All the materials were donated and the canvas bags sewn by women who were formerly prostitutes or drug addicts.

Community Hours is a volunteering platform that gives the youth opportunities to volunteer in order to allow them to make an impact in the lives of others.

Sarah Welton-Blake, the executive director of Community Hours said, “The volunteers are young people who are unemployed and desperate to make something of their lives, so we pay the volunteers to participate.

“We set ourselves a target of getting involved with various members of the community and Kingsmead wanted to do something for their school. It’s been an amazing journey of people doing different things in order to make a meaningful difference.

“The response has been amazing, at last count we had 550 people, which is incredible. Today is a magnificent day to celebrate and stand back and say we have amazing young people in this generation.”
