Gothe Institute in Parkwood to unveil new library with exciting new concepts

PARKWOOD – The newly-renovated library at the Goethe Institute features new and exciting elements. Find out more here.

The Goethe Institute in Parkwood has recently renovated its library and visitors can now look forward to an exciting new concept of a library-gamebox-hub.

“We’ve moved away from the typical library where everyone has to be silent. I think we’re giving the library a voice and allowing for that space of creativity,” said Nicole Meyer, the library and project co-ordinator at the Goethe Institute.

The new space took about five months to complete following extensive planning.

The new library will both English and German books as well as learning resources. The game box is a separate room which will feature gaming laptops with curated German- and Sub-Saharan African-developed games and virtual reality games.

The hub will be a co-working space with room for eight creatives.

It is the intention that the game box will encourage people to show what they have developed and connect with others. Stefanie Kastner, the head of the library and information services for Sub-Saharan Africa said, “We would like to curate games coming from Sub-Saharan Africa as well as other countries to give an idea of the game developing scenes in Africa but also in Germany and to connect people.”

The hub will be related to the game box as it will be a space to work on new ideas and receive mentorship. There are eight spaces available and those who wish to work on a defined project will be required to submit an application. The applicants who are successful will be able to connect with others and receive mentorship to develop ideas.

“It can be anyone from any kind of creative industry and the jury is going to have a look at the different projects to create a mixture. I like the hub idea so much because you can get other ideas and views.”

To celebrate the newly-renovated library, the institute will host a networking event and open day on 29 July which will have a wide variety of activities throughout the day.
