UPDATE: No arrests in Carlton Centre cash-in-transit heist to date

CARLTON CENTRE – To date no arrests have been made in the Carlton Centre cash-in-transit heist that occurred in April .

A stationary G4S truck was the target of a group of armed robbers when a cash-in-transit heist took place in broad daylight outside the Carlton Centre on 3 April.

Two G4S guards were reportedly injured in an exchange of gunfire with the armed robbers, who eventually fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.

Nearly two months after the incident, a G4S spokesperson said the safety of custodians (guards) was paramount during cash-in-transit operations.

“The Carlton Centre is a high-risk area in the Johannesburg CBD and G4S is working closely with the South African police to ensure increased security when performing services in this area,” said the spokesperson, who requested not to have their name published.

“G4S Cash Solutions continuously develops and implements technology to safeguard its employees, customers’ assets as well as the general public.

“At the time, the security officers were performing a cash-collection service for a customer based at the Carlton Centre when they were attacked by a group of six heavily armed robbers who used 9mm and AK47 firearms during the heist.”

The spokesperson added that the suspects fled the scene without any official firearms, despite police indicating that two service pistols were stolen from the guards.

Both guards sustained gunshot injuries during the incident and were taken to a nearby hospital.

The spokesperson indicated that the guards were still recovering from their ordeal. “G4S offers trauma counselling to all employees involved in such incidents, however, the security officers have since been discharged from hospital and are recovering at home. To date, no arrests have been made with regard to this incident and members of the public, who may have information that could assist the South African Police Service in their investigation, are encouraged to come forward.”
